Discover the secrets of extracting colour and prints from plant materials, such as gum leaves, onion skins and hibiscus flowers.
Over two exciting days, we will brew up a number of vats, and experiment with dyeing, over-dyeing, printing and other design techniques.
We will use luxurious silk and wool fabrics, which take up natural dyes very well.
Lessons will include how to mordant your fabrics to achieve better results, how to colour-shift using modifiers, and techniques such as dipping leaves before printing and how to use a carrier blanket.
The tutor will provide students with a kit including a silk scarf, a wool scarf and fabric samples, along with some watercolour papers. All plant materials, mordants and additives will be provided along with the equipment needed.
Students will be sent a list of plant materials that they might wish to bring with them to share with each other.
